Celebrating 7:2 and 2:12 against Garching Atomics 3

With a 7 game winning streak in the baggage, the Atomics came to Erding to continue the sweep.

Finding the “perfect” lineup… not an easy task. But with every game, one notices how things move in the right direction. And on this day the lineup was just right, as was the mood in the team.

Jakob Reuter had is proably best day on the mound. He controlled the strikezone perfectly and really painted the corners, giving the Atomics batters a hard time indeed. He certainly earned the Player of the Day award. When a batter did reach, most of them were thrown out later on. Jakob had strong support from the rest of the infield, where almost every play worked out.

Even the batting – not an area where the Mallards have been shining lately – worked considerably better. We saw many line drives with 2 or more runners on base, scoring the oh so important runs. Of course, a bit of luck is always needed, and this time the Mallards got a fair share.

The Mallards of course also wanted to win the second game, but it quickly became obvious, that they had consumed most of the gunpowder in the first game. Starting pitcher Stefan Göttler never really got going and left the mound after 10 batters. Jörg Baumgärtner relived, but could not do much to stop the Garching landslide.

The Mallards committed many errors as well, which the strong offensive of the Atomics used ruthlessly to score time and again. The Mallards batting was almost as good as in the first game, but now the guests showed their usual defensive strength and it became clear early on, who was going to prevail this time.

Coach Sven Bornhagen:
We have been close to a victory many times this season, “smelling the sensation” one might say. But we’ve not been rewarded, mostly having one really bad inning which messed up the games. This time, I had a good feeling already when writing the lineup. The way the team behaved today… after such a long slump, the feeling of finally winning again was unbelivable. The guys worked focused, never relaxed and firmly believed in victory. I’m very, very proud of the team and I could have handed out “Player of the Day” balls to each and everyone of them today.
