Season opener loss after a marathon game

The Mallards lost the season-opening double-header against a slugging München Caribes.

With a larger team than in many years, the players from Erding and Dachau visited Munich. Markus Egner and Anders Lind, designated coaches for this day, had a large pick of both in- and outfielder and pitchers/catchers. The team still has to coalesce, the players had only few chances to get to know each other and train together, but the defense worked remarkably well. The loss by 3:7 in the first game was rather caused by the strong pitching by the Caribe’s pitcher Raimund Lange, who sent 9 batters packing in four innings. The Mallards starting pitcher Albin Huber did a good job; he didn’t score any strikeouts, but had a good control over the strike zone. Neither the relievers Casey Langford and Stefan Göttler yielded any runs.

The outfield, especially center fielder Jürgen Schulz, did some spectacular plays. They kept trying to nail the runners at home plate with good throws and succeeded once. Markus Habeck in right field almost got an assist with a quick throw to 1st base on a ball batted towards him.

Best batter was Jürgen Schulz with 2 hits, the three runs were scored by Moritz Settles, Stefan Göttler and Paul Gleissner. Pitcher: Albin Huber (Losing Pitcher with 4 ER), Casey Langford and Stefan Göttler. Catcher: Dominik Göttler.

Game 2 was a completely different story. After a timid first inning, the Mallards took the lead with 11:7 after the 3rd inning. After the top of the 5th they had stretched it to 15:8. This is when the home team struck back. First, they scored 3 runs and put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs against Jakob Reuter. Reliever Jürgen Schulz gave up one walk and a hit, resulting in the Caribes scoring 7 runs and tying the game.

Since a baseball game can’t end with a draw, en extra inning was needed. The Mallards scored twice and only would have to hold their defense. However, after 6 batters the Caribes had tied the game again, and had runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs. Casey Langford was brought in as reliever and he put the next batter on 1st with an intentional walk, knowing that this player had landed several hits previously. Langford then struck the next batter out with three fastballs. The 7th inning started with the Mallards scoring once, but this time the couldn’t stem the tide and the home team scored the winning run after a 4 hours and 4 minutes marathon.

Best batters: Jakob Reuter (3 hits, 3 runs), Moritz Settles (3 hits, 2 runs, 4 RBIs) and Stefan Göttler (2 hits, 2 runs, 3 RBIs). Pitcher: Stefan Göttler, Jakob Reuter, Jürgen Schulz, Casey Langford and Jörg Baumgärtner (Losing Pitcher). Catcher: Moritz Christ, Dominik Göttler and Sven Bornhagen.

Interim coach Anders Lind:
The loss in the second game really hurt, after we’d played so well. But it was great to see how quickly the team has grown together and the potential we’ve got. After all, our season has just started and we’ll surely make some noise in our league!
