After a few practice ganes, the official season starts on April 29, 2017 with an away game against the Baldham Boars for the tossball team, as well as for the State League team against the München Caribes 4.
Much has happened and countless hours invested to make the ballpark ready for baseball again. The entire infield has a new drainage. Most of the work has been done, now the field has to settle and some grass has to grow, before the first home games end of June.
With Jeff Settles an experienced coach returns to Erding. This year the team is setting a high goal, reaching for the top positions in the league. Settles returns after ten years absence and is busily re-forming and extending the team. Several new young talents have joined and three experienced players from Dachau augment the team. The first half of the season are all away games. This year’s opponents are München Caribes 4, Buchbinder Legionäre Regensburg 4, Augsburg Gators 2 and Schwaig Red Lions 2; each pair plays double headers home and away. The Mallards hope to score many runs and wins in each of the 5 inning games. Go Mallards!
The youngest team has expanded significantly over the last months, counting 19 players at the start of the season. Headcoach Melanie Benglan has formed a team with both experienced players and newcomers. The team is shaping up nicely with a great team spirit.
The tossball league was re-organized for the 2017 season, with more emphasis on grouping the teams according to experience and age, so the Mallards hope to play more against teams with similar strength – and score more wins than in 2016. Last year, many of the players they faced were quite a bit larger and older, intimidating many of the younger players. Season highlights will be Onkel Toms Baseball Camp in June and the the Bavarian Championships in Freising July 9. League games are scheduled against Baldham Boars, Garching Atomics, SG Rosenheim/Bad Aibling and Freising Grizzlies 2.
Headcoach Benglan has the continued support from Noel Breil from the Youth State League team, as well as Moritz Christ and Markus Habeck from the State League team. Starting this year, youth player Caroline Wendik will also act as assisting coach.
Nine of the tossball players receive additional training from Sven Bornhagen, preparing them for Livepitch, which also enhances their proficiency in the tossball team. We plan to schedule some training games against other livepitch teams, and hopefully enter the team in the official league in the autumn or in 2018.
Youth State League:
Currently, the livepitch players train with the youth team. With only 8 players, the team this year forms a joint team with the Ingolstadt Schanzer, who also don’t have enough players. The first game has already taken place, ending with losses by 23:2 and 15:3 against the Haar Disciples. However, the team is forming up nicely and will surely win a few games this season.
Youth player Michael Schirmer is part of the Disciple Baseball Academy in Haar, and is also playing with the State League team this year.
Much thanks to the growth of the tossball team, an additional group of players have formed: our barbecue team Crazy Duckheads. Comprised of hobby players and parents, our “crazies” are starting their second season. They train at least once a week, have learned a lot in the games and tournaments last year and are highly motivated.
The goal for 2017 is to participate in both friendly games and a few tournaments, and hopefully put togehter an official “mini-league” of other BBQ teams in the vincinity.
